Speech Therapy Department Overview
Outpatient Speech Therapy at Faulkner Hospital includes the diagnosis and treatment of adults with speech, language, voice, and swallowing problems. Modified Barium Swallow (MBS) studies, or videofluorscopic swallowing studies (VFSS,) are also conducted in our Radiology Department with collaboration between Speech-Language Pathology and Radiology. We also provide assessment and treatment of children (above age 3) and adolescents with oral-motor, speech, and language difficulties due to delayed development or as a result of an acute injury.
For outpatient scheduling, you may contact the Rehabilitation Services Department at 617-983-7271 for an appointment. Please bring your physician's prescription for speech therapy (current within the past 30 days,) any relevant reports or documentation related to your condition, and insurance card to your initial evaluation.

Inpatient Speech and Swallowing Therapy
This therapy includes the evaluation, treatment, and counseling of adults with new onset or worsening speech, language, cognitive-communicative, and swallowing problems based on acute medical changes. Dysphasia (swallowing) intervention may include bedside evaluation, Modified Barium Swallow (MBS) study, recommendations for diet modifications or specific swallowing maneuvers, and/or discussion about a patient's desires for nutrition and hydration sources in light of quality of life issues.
To receive Speech and Swallowing services, the patient's medical team must request a formal consult during their hospital admission.
