Actor, television icon and Open Arms Campaign Ambassador Henry Winkler will speak at Faulkner Hospital to tell his personal experiences as a caregiver to his mother who lived with upper limb spasticity after having a stroke.
When Ilsa Winkler suffered a stroke in 1989 at age 76, she lost her hand and arm mobility and Winkler was unable to help her recover. Upper limb spasticity, which stiffens the finger, wrist and arm muscles, prevented her from performing once easy daily tasks and ultimately was the cause of her losing her independence.

“In caring for someone who has suffered a stroke, individuals have unique stories, needs and interests that can help others going through similar situations,” says Kennis Bishop, MS, CCC-SLP, Speech-Language Pathologist, who leads Faulkner Hospital’s Stroke Support Group. “Having Mr. Winkler come speak to other stroke survivors and caregivers will help people understand that they are not alone in this process.”
