Faulkner Hospital Breast Centre

The Faulkner Breast Centre is dedicated to providing the most
up-to-date, comprehensive breast care for women, including active clinical research, high-quality treatment and patient education. The first of its kind in the country, the Faulkner Breast Centre has earned an outstanding reputation for its exceptional treatment of breast disease, compassion for patients and their families, and focus on patient empowerment.

The Faulkner Breast Centre encourages women to be active participants in their own health care. When a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer, the questions and decisions she faces can be overwhelming. That's why specialists at the Faulkner Breast Centre in Boston take the time to talk with a patient about breast cancer, all of her treatment options and the feelings that can accompany a diagnosis.

A Clinical Team Dedicated to Women

The Faulkner Breast Centre's entire clinical team, directed by board-certified surgeon, Dr. Margaret Duggan, is dedicated to caring for women. This clinical team includes breast surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, plastic and reconstructive surgeons, nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, a social worker and caring support staff.
The Centre's specialists are leaders in the evaluation and treatment of breast cancer as well as other breast disorders such as lumps, nipple discharge, breast pain or abnormal mammograms.

Total Care

When surgery and other treatments are necessary, the Faulkner Breast Centre's clinical team works together to respond to patients and their families. The Centre treats 500 new cancer patients a year and follows more than 7,000 patients with breast cancer as well as those who are at high risk.

The Faulkner Breast Centre's exceptionally strong nursing component enables patients to have easy access to a knowledgeable health professional whenever they have questions or concerns. The Centre also provides support programs for women who have been newly diagnosed with breast cancer.

A Commitment to Education

Confusion about breast disorders and their treatments can increase a patient's anxiety. Equipped with the information she needs, a woman is able to confidently make the treatment choices that are right for her. The Faulkner Breast Centre encourages women to be active participants in their own health care by emphasizing patient education about breast disease and the full spectrum of treatment options.

The Centre's commitment to education about breast cancer reaches beyond one-to-one patient education by providing speakers for community groups, as well as programs for health professionals and the public.

Research

Supported by the Faulkner Breast Centre Research Fund, the Faulkner Breast Centre is actively involved in clinical research to broaden medical knowledge about the causes and effective treatments of breast disease. Projects initiated by the Centre include the study of new techniques in diagnosing breast lesions and alternatives to surgical biopsy, among many others. Additionally, the Centre is developing an extensive computerized database of patient information, providing a unique and valuable research tool and an enormous range of research possibilities.
